ultramature 21 (À LOUER) is a project in situ conceived expressly by the duo ultranature (Bruno Baltzer and Leonora Bisagno) for the project Making of at Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’Art Contemporain in the framework of the biennial multi-institutional project Atelier Luxembourg.

Following the institution's proposal to transform, for a 3 months period, the halls of the Casino Luxembourg in 14 artists’ studio, the artists question the relation between institutions and artists, through its unstable definition, and the frail boundary between an increasing spectacularisation of all art's creation and management with the status of artist.

If coming into temporary possession of a public space's area, simultaneously proscribes a certain series of actions (by a signed contract) it unwittingly allows other activities. If it's clear that it's quite difficult to permanently occupy a museum, or sell it, even once that the institution is given as a studio, it becomes evidently possible to decide how to manage it.

But what can be actually rented? How to define the roles? What about the increasing"art for rent trend"?

A studio is a studio, but it can also be the home, it can be a place to share, it can be a place to sublet to earn a living, it can be a place to be found and of which necessarily get possession or on the contrary a place to get rid of.

À LOUER in french means also: to praise and to congratulate. It's time to play.

Ultranature 21 / à louer was firstly proposed for the Nuit des Musées, one of the most popular event in Luxembourg which gathers a one-night public in search for excitement and surprise.

For this occasion ultranature installed a photographic device in Leonora Bisagno's studio. Every 30 seconds a picture was captured. Some people didn't notice the device. Most of them, though, detected the camera and interacted with it.

The camera acted then as an in-between device: similar to a webcam circuit of the museum (operating autonomously as a security system) it functioned also as an unforeseen bird’s eye view photo booth arousing people’s desire to act in front of it. About 800 pictures were taken.

Some people asked if, by entering the studio, they had potentially transformed into goods for rent. Institution, artists, spectators were concretely at issue.

About two weeks after the presentation of À LOUER for the Nuit des Musées the artists decided to give to the multi-complex sense of this message also a restricted but effective meaning. A rate was then communicated with available dates. Surprise, wonder and proposals followed.

Je suis passé dernièrement à l'exposition Making off. Ce projet d'exposition résonne particulièrement à mes petites oreilles car depuis deux ans la question de l'atelier de l'artiste formule chez moi quelques travaux plastiques de natures variables diras-t-on. Du coup je serais honoré,  voir émerveillé de discuter  à propos des consignes qui régissent cette vrai vitrine que permet votre projet d'espace à louer...
Si j'abuse pas trop j'aimerais converser avec vous de votre vision à propos de cet espace de monstration, en vue d’une possible contribution de ma part; d’une réalisation passée ou à venir...
Bien évidement je n’attends rien de particulier, le temps que nous avons passé au casino Luxembourg ultérieurement n’a pas suffit à mon entière satisfaction et de toute façon une seconde visite de m’a part est inévitable. (watch out!)
J'espère ne pas avoir été trop brouillon dans ma démarche et attendrais une réponse comme un enfant qui attend ses cadeaux sous le sapin.

Je m'appelle Albin Hodza, étudiant en 5ème année à l'école supérieure d'art de Lorraine. Après avoir visité making of je voudrais louer votre espace dans un des laps de temps disponibles. Quelles sont les démarches à suivre pour pouvoir le louer ?
